Best non-VR 55-200mm zoom out there
Strengths: Size and weight, good feel on the zoom ring, usually fast to focus, inexpensive, macro, and can focus closer than any other 55-200mm through the entire zoom range, hood is included.
Weakness: Loud autofocus. Autofocus is through screw drive, so its a manual focus if you have the D40. Rotating focus ring with a cheap feel on the manual focus is annoying with circular polarizer.
This is a great daytime lens for action and macro work. The minimum aperature of F4-5.6 is standard for all 55-200 lenses and these are not great in low light where fast shutter speeds are necessary. If you're at the kid's baseball or football game and it is sunny out, your pictures will be beautiful with great colors. I have taken this lens to a MN Twins game indoors and I need to crank the ISO...
