Strengths: AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro that gives minimum focusing distance of 20cm and wide picture.
Weakness: No weaknesses so far.
Bought lens from amazon $360 shipped no taxes. For that value I am impressed with a quality of pictures. That is my first EOS 350d digital camera, so I am not really good expert, but pictures are not even comparable with my previous digital cameras. Basically I wanted good inexpensive lens to shoot regular pictures. That lens give you superb picture quality even with low light condition. Highly...
Strengths: Build quality, Range, Macro capability, and Price
Weakness: f/2.8 is not fixed; f/2.8 is only available from 17-20mm
This has ended up being a surprisingly great lens and has exceeded all of my expectations. My primary lens ranges from 24-135mm and was looking for something that would get me a little wider as well as a lens that would replace my Canon 350D kit lens. The Sigma 17-70 has proven to be an excellent kit lens replacement! The build quality is outstanding, much better than the kit. Range is very...
Strengths: Good color, contrast, and sharpness. No flagrant sweet spot to work around. 17-70 is a good range. Fast and quiet autofocus.
Weakness: Rotating autofocus ring can catch me off guard. Autofocus not as consistent as I'd like for macro. Some barrel distortion at the wide end (to be expected).
Color and sharpness are very good. The lens is a lot quieter and faster (and sturdier) than expected. I haven't found there to be a flagrant sweet spot I really need to avoid or work around (though reviews show f/5.6 generally sharpest, followed by f/8 I believe). My biggest concern is that my copy seems to occasionally backfocus by a couple mm when doing macro-ish stuff at 70mm (and my formal...
Strengths: From wide 17mm at F2.8 and 70mm at F4.5. Tag sharp images. Macro capability. An excellent walk around camera. Solidly built too.
Weakness: A little heavy for my Canon Rebel XT.
I love this Sigma latest wide telelens. It's about $360 but does the job very well esp. under good light condition. The Macro capabilty is an added bonus. The 17mm to 70mm make it a very versatile walk around lens. If you can only afford one lens this is it. It's well priced for what it is.
Strengths: Great macro photos.
Weakness: Can have trouble focusing. Takes weak photos in non-perfect light situations.
I was hemming and hawing about if I should buy this lens or the Canon 17-85. Living in a small town with no camera shops that carry each I chose purely by others reviews of both lenses. I can't say I chose the right lens. I took it on a three week vacation to South Africa and took over 700 photos. I am dissapointed with many of them. My hubbys little point and shoot took better photos of images...

Best lens in its class. Highly recommended for...
Strengths: Well built. Excellent glass elements giving you great colors, contrast, low purple fringing. Excellent range - wide angle (17mm) to mid tele (70mm). Large aperture of f/2.8 to 4.5. Excellent macro.
Weakness: AF hunts in low light. Focus ring rotates during auto mode - very annoying. f/2.8 only for at widest. No USM, so a little noisy.
If you had to buy one lens for your beginner slr canon digital camera, this lens would be it. The Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 gives you a much better range than the canon kit lens and at much faster apertures. The excellent glass elements gives you great colors, contrast and low purple fringing. The image quality you get with this lens rivals many other higher priced canon lenses. For the price,...
