Excellent lens

Strengths: Nice Bokeh, Light weight, VR increases your chance of successful shots.

Weakness: Expensive, plastic hood

Ok, I have had this lens a couple of months now. What at first seemed like a very good lens is now one I consider exceptional. In fact it is now my favorite for several reasons. First of all this lens consistently produces beautiful, even toned and complimentory Bokeh to my images. Bokeh is that term used to describe the elements of a photograph that are out of focus. This lens has an extremely...

Nikon 105mm VR

Strengths: VR is very useful. Fast and sharp lens. Light weight. Very beautiful bokeh.

Weakness: Auto focus is not good at close-up mode (time to switch to manual) A bit ugly without the hood (if this can be called weakness)

Definitely the best macro lens for all the Nikon User. Light weight with F2.8 and VR, I will sometime choose this one instead of my heavy 70-200. In order to achieve 1:1 ratio, you need a tripod and also very careful manual focusing.

Excellent Macro/Mid-zoom

Strengths: VR, 1:1 closeup

Weakness: Limited use

This is a wonderful lens for specific usage, namely, mid range zoom and of course, macro work. It's sharp and fast in terms of aperture and auto-focus speed, and it works great with portrait and small objects. I did take it to the city a couple of times and found it quite limited in shooting people or architecture.

Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED

Strengths: Excellent portrait lens. Excellent build

Weakness: Has difficulty focusing when using as a macro lens.

It is virtually impossible to use auto focus without using a tripod when using the macro mode. However, when you do get it focused you get an excellent image. When used as a portrait lens, you get excellent images at all f stops; depending upon your desired depth of field.

Up close and personal

Strengths: fast portrait lens, VR capable, Macro

Weakness: None so far.

I really like this lens for both portrait and product work. It's my first prime AF-S lens, and I prefer carring this one in my bag wherever I go instead of my Nikkor 105 f2.0 AF-DC lens for its macro and VR capabilities.
