Additional Specifications
Lens Construction: 17 Elements in 11 Groups
Strengths: Vibration reduction, High power zoom range, quick and accurate focusing, sharp optics
Weakness: High price, heavy, and slow aperature
This is a very nicely made lens, typical Nikon build quality. I have had my lens now for well over a year and do not use it too often due to its size and weight. I suppose it is actually fairly compact considering the zoom range it covers. It does do an excellent job for what it was designed to do. The VR works quite well and the optics produce sharp edge and corner detail on my Nikon D series...
Strengths: Light weight for a lens of this focal length, sharp optics.
Weakness: Lack of AF-S
This would have been an impeccable lens with the addition of AF-S. Focus speed is adequate on my D200, but in the low-light conditions of the golden hour when I often find myself shooting wildlife, this lens can sometimes be frustrating. I have missed some potentially great shots where focus hunts in these types of conditions, and often go to my 70-300 AF-S VR under less than ideal lighting. It...
Strengths: Super tele-zoom
Weakness: Soft image quality at the 400mm end
This lens is a good lens for a super tele zoom with VR function and high quality. It gives a effective zoom range 120-600 on a APS size sensor. This VR function is very helpful for a tele-zoom lens. It would be better for making an f/2.8 tele-zoom. But the build wouldn't be as compact as this lens.

Strengths: Ease of use, clartity of photos
Weakness: weighs 7 lbs, pricey
Recently went on an African Safari and got spectacular photos with this lens, a monopod, an F-100 Nikon, and 400 speed press film. Focuses sharply and quickly. Got great shots even when I knew I was moving way too much!
