Strengths: Good image quality. Relatively light weight
Weakness: Over the past year we have had 2 lenses fail for unknown reasons. Lenses are used in a protected environment so impact is not a factor. Canon has repaired/replaced in all cases.
This lens is being used in our product for portrait work. It provides a good range of focal length with good image quality. Reliability has been reasonably good in that with over 30 lenses in use, we have had only 2 failures after taking approximately 1,000,000 shutter releases. Cameras are used in the field (non-Studio environment) but they are protected from impact by a housing. Overall, this...
Strengths: I got this for my Rebel XT instead of the kit lens. It is fast, quiet and the price is reasonable. It is good for everyday use and the built quality is very good for the price.
Weakness: I wish that it went to 18mm like the kit lens and also that it was a 2.8 like the tamron. Also, it is little soft at 28mm.
I recommend this lens together with the 50mm 1.8 and you will have a good start up lens for your camera. I am now lookin for a good wide (18mm) lens for my rebel XT.
Strengths: Deathly silent and fast USM, zoom range, overall build quality, price, image quality (compared to consumer lenses).
Weakness: Zoom ring doesn't feel as smooth as it should (maybe it's my copy), a little soft at ends of the zoom range (28 and 105).
Compared to other consumer lenses at this price range, this is a great buy. . The zoom range is great, but I wish it was a little bit wider to compensate for the 1.6 conversion factor on my Rebel XT. For some odd reason, my copy of this lens sometimes makes a click noise at 29 when i try to zoom in, but its fine at higher focal lengths. I hope nothing's wrong with it, at least its still under...
Strengths: Good focal range, light weight good price
Weakness: soft wide open at 105mm, but this is normal for zooms unless you have a L series lens, lens hood not included
A great lens for the price, would suggest stopping down to 5.6 when using it at 105mm since it is soft wide open. Only wish Canon had included a lens hood, it costs $20.00 but it is a must.
Strengths: Fast, quiet USM focusing
I bought this lens to replace the kit lens bundled with rebel xt. It has a longer zoom range, great for roaming in the city. It's pretty compact, though made of plastic, has a good solid feel, is a little heavier than what I expected. So far, I am pretty impressed with the lens. I am only an amateur in photography, and this lens delivers sharp and vivid pictures in my opinion. I am glad that I...
Strengths: Good Price, Fast Focusing, Sharp Image, light weight and small size, sturdy built, fulltime manual mode, front element doesn't rotate
Weakness: none
I've got this lens for my new Canon Rebel 350D XT. Consider the price & quality of this lens, it is an excellent value. It focuses very fast, and the images are very sharp. The size is small, and the weight is not heavy at all. It is fulltime manual, so that I am able to manually adjust the focus without switching between AF / MF. The front element doesn't rotate when focusing, which is a plus...
Strengths: short focusing dist. /durable
Weakness: heavy
I got the lense used but with no major dings or scratches. It has since served on various occasions ranging from sport photography in the snow to portrate photography in the city. On the whole a great lense and a must have.
Strengths: Nice image quality; good build quality
Weakness: None, as long as you remember this is a consumer lens and not expensive L-glass.
I've seen these selling USED on internet auction sites for $50-$75 MORE than NEW ones found on Pricegrabber.com. If I'm packing light, this is the lens I keep on my 20D for general use. Highly recommended.
Strengths: USM, silent, light, cheap
Weakness: macro feature doesn't work well
This is a great lens. I've heard about the lens, but haven't tested it thouroughly. I used Tamron 28-75mm before, which was an excellent lens also. I would say that Tamron lens is better than this Canon lens (of course, it's $150 more expensive). I just want the range a bit longer for walking around.

Good starter zoom lens
Strengths: Good value (less than $250 and you get a nice range), fast AF, sharp quality, works on both film and dSLRs
Weakness: Lens hood is separate, which is a must (susceptible to flare), somewhat stiff zoom ring, no L glass
Do NOT mix this up with the f/4-5.6 model - this is perhaps one of the best zoom lenses to get if you're on a budget and just starting out. If you have a dSLR, more than likely you'll have a compensation factor 1.6x so just remember your images will be a bit larger. I keep this lens on for a good majority of my pictures because of its relatively light weight - great for traveling excursions. It...
