This camera was purchased for a vacation to replace the much larger Canon GL-1. It has the same 3cc chip which gives subperb true to life color and uses the same Mini-DV tapes. It worked just fine for us. I would highly recommend it.

Weakness: low light performance, touch screen is tedious. Sony Vaio may be required for 5.1 suround feature. Stills are average.
I love this camera. It has every feature you could ask for, and the interface is easy to use. The HC1000 is perfect for a person with audio in mind. The head phone and mic inputs are separate from AV in/outs. The on board microphone works well, but this camera wouldn't mind an external one at all.
