Summary
Product Title: Canon XH A1 Digital Camcorder - 2.8" LCD - CCD
Manufacturer: Canon
Lowest Price: $3,699.99
Power Score: 4.4 | 15 Reviews
Strengths: =Price for pro =Great lens =3 CCD =HD =Customization settings =Mic inputs: phantom power, line level and mic level =Handle on the top for low angle shots =Recording controls on side and top
Weakness: =Large for travel. =Software time split did not work. =Captures at 1440x1080; not the full 1920x1080. =Stores video MPEG2 while AVCHD may be better.
The Canon XH A1 is a beautiful camera and one of the best prices for professional features. It has a great lens, 3 CCD, and HD recording capability. The camera provides many more customization settings than I may ever use. I was afraid of the size, but it does not feel as big as the measurements. However, fitting it in a box for transportation requires something rather large. The handle on the...
Strengths: Dependable white balance on full auto mode; Great Picture quality, great in doors under natural and low-light situations. Low Noise.
Weakness: Could be shoulder mountable for added stability.
Great Camera... Great Picture... Could make the ND filtering automatic... Being hand held, it lacks the stability of a shoulder mounted cam... Fast Focusing, and lens. Controlls are many, and a little confusing at first, but if you are used to canon products, you will catch on fast.
Strengths: Superlative image quality, virtually every parameter can be customized, 24f mode, long battery life, excellent low light performance, well balanced
Weakness: Bulky enough that it can't be hand held for a sustained period of time, it requires either a tripod or shoulder support, overall build and controls feel a little flimsy w/ hollow plastic feel to it.
I looked at similar models made by Panasonic HVX200, Sony HVR V1U & JVC GY110 and decided to go with the Canon XH A1 due in large parts to its very sharp and natural looking image quality. The MSRP is very competitive and offers many pro-settings. Ergonomics could be improved but the camera is easy to use even in manual mode.
Strengths: Canon L-series 20X optical zoom HD lens, manual iris ring control on lens, gain switch, color bars switch, white balance switch, white balance color temp fine tuning, high res display, and more
Weakness: 30F and 24F frame modes are not widely supported, they should have just recorded the frame mode in a standard video signal format that can be imported by all NLE's and DTE devices
Overall, this is a fantastic HDV camcorder in this class. I'd buy another one if I needed a second HDV camcorder. Some more things I wish it had: 1. Separate audio level controls for channel 1 and 2 when you are splitting input 1 to both channels. Often pro's like to set one channel a few dB lower than the other to have a safety track in case one of them overloads. 2. 30p and 24p modes that can...
Strengths: Accurate gain control with reduced noise. Capacity to record and shoot still images simultaneously. Cine look and feel (color range and frame rate). PAL/NTSC upgrade.
Weakness: No interchangeable lens. Zoom speed on the handle combersome to adjust. Still picture may look slightly different from what you see in the viewfinder/LCD when camera features such as gain are active.
I like the fact that you can shoot right off the bat without the need to adjust the multiple parameters that come with it. Viewfinder is relatively small for a prosumer camera like this one, but LCD is bright enough and with extraordinary resolution. Having three rings (Focus/Zoom/Iris) on the lens is a big plus. Overall it is a cost-effective camera for prosumers compared to other competitors...
Strengths: Great picture. Impressive array of options, including preset focus and zoom. Easy handling. Good sound. All around fantastic package.
Weakness: The only way to shift from XLR audio inputs to line mic.shotgun seems to be through the menu, which is tedious and time consuming. It would be great if there were an easy-access switch.
I am stunned how much this camera has to offer for the price. It really is the "next generaton" - a leap that will allow aspiring filmmakers into the HDV market, and hopefully bring a fresh point of view to the business. Take the time (if you're new to video) to learn all of the buttons and what they do. It is a very powerful tool in the right hands.
Strengths: crystal picture
Weakness: None
This camcorder is the best camera i ever gotton. It has alot of high-tech stuff on it and it is pretty light for a big camera. Also the lens are really good.
Strengths: HD, Great Manual Controls for the look of the image, sharp LCD.
Weakness: Default controls need to be manipulated to get better image quality.
This camera almost has it all for an all-around camera. It's size is adequate for handheld, LCD is sharp and adjustable, and manual controls are everywhere for complete control. The image out of the box is great in HD, but for SD you might want to adjust the default picture controls to your specifications or to other cameras. Also make sure you manipulate the image quality if you are shooting at...
THE GOOD: Excellent video quality; extremely customizable; great lens and optical stabilizer; fast focus. THE BAD: No 720p recording capability; coarse, low-resolution LCD. THE BOTTOM LINE: Canons XH A1 and XH G1 are excellent camcorders for entry-level professionals and independent filmmakers, with hard-to-beat prices for what they offer.

Canon XHA1
Strengths: This camera has a 20X zoom which is great for what I use it for (Outdoor Filming). It is light and has all the setting adjustments you could ask for.
Weakness: With all the buttons and setting adjustments it could get very complicated. Study your manual hard!
Overall it is an awesome camera. The quality of the footage I have taken so far is top notch. Being in the outdoor industry I believe this camera is the best out there for the price! I would definitely buy it again!
