Memory Type Although some cameras do have some memory built in, most users benefit from using higher capacity flash memory cards to store more pictures and/or longer videos. Generally speaking, Digital SLRs and the more advanced standard cameras use CompactFlash and Microdrive cards, while the rest use either a form of Memory Stick (Sony), xD-Picture Card (Olympus & Fuji), or Secure Digital Card (most other brands). Optical Zoom This number tells you how much larger the camera can make its subject appear simply through a slide of the lens. In other words, a camera with 3X Optical Zoom can make a subject appear 3 times larger in the frame. Optical zoom is generally preferred to digital zoom, since it can magnify an image without losing picture quality.

Image Processor

Total Pixels This tells you the total number of pixels that are recorded when you take a picture. The more Megapixels a camera has, the higher the resolution of its pictures will be. For example, a camera that can take 1280x1024 resolution pictures can capture 1,310,720 pixels, or 1.3 MP. Conversely, a 5MP camera can take pictures up to 2592x1944, or 5,038,848, pixels (Megapixel ratings are generally estimates). Higher resolution pictures are not only larger when viewed on your computer, they are necessary to make larger, high-quality prints.

Image Sensor An image sensor records the brightness on each photosite when the shutter is open, it is stored as a set of numbers that can then be used to set the color and brightness of dots on the screen or ink on the printed page to reconstruct the image. There are two main types of image sensors CCD (charge-coupled device) and CMOS (complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor). CMOS are generally cheaper to produce and consume less power, but are also less sensative than CCD. However both produce roughly the same quality image.
