THE GOOD: Lots of features to experiment with; manual, semimanual controls; built-in GPS. THE BAD: Disappointing low-light photos. THE BOTTOM LINE: A very good, fully loaded compact megazoom, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 offers a lot of shooting flexibility and a built-in GPS.

The Lumix DMC-ZS7 is a 12.1 megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera from Panasonic, set to be released in early 2010. While similar to the Lumix DMC-ZS5, this camera has a larger screen at 3 inches, includes a built-in GPS, AVCHD Lite support and a mini-HDMI port. The DMC-ZS7 features the “Venus Engine HD II,” which is a step up from the DMC-ZS5’s Venus Engine VI. With a 12x...

Panasonic may no longer have the compact super-zoom market to itself, but the latest Lumix ZS7 remains a highly compelling camera that’s likely to sell by the bucket-load. It takes the already excellent Lumix ZS3 with its 12x zoom, 720p video, 3in / 460k screen and multiple aspect recording, and enhances it with GPS capabilities, manual exposure options and an enhanced Intelligent Auto mode,...

One of the more popular digital camera categories to emerge over the past few years was pioneered by the Panasonic ZS7's predecessors: a pocket digital camera with a surprisingly long zoom. The Panasonic ZS7 continues to impress, with a 12.1-megapixel sensor and a 12x optical zoom, a high-res 3-inch LCD, and a new GPS feature to help jog your memory of where you were when you took all those...

In most respects, the ZS7 is better than the ZS3 that it replaces, offering manual controls, a built-in GPS, improved image stabilization, faster autofocus, enhanced image sharpening, and more. I do, however, think that the ZS7 has taken a step backwards in terms of image quality, due to the heavy noise reduction required to keep noise levels down on this 12 Megapixel camera. Some other issues I...
