Strengths: I'm a relative noob to digital photography so I can't really comment from expertise, but it seems to do everything I'll ever need.
Weakness: No built-in flash/light. Their older models had it; don't know why they dumped it.
Used to have a JVC VHS-C. It broke after about a year and had absolutely horrible sound. I did my homework this time around and the 12/16 bit PCM options are what I'm looking for in addition to external mic. Now, you might wonder for a newbie, why not go with the TRV 22 or 33 at the most. Well, I couldn't pass up a deal giving me the 38 for $686 online. I also purchased a five-year onsite...
Strengths: Good in low-light conditions, unlike most other brands
Weakness: Pathetic warranty period; very expensive batteries.
This is probably as good a Sony DV camcorder as you're going to get within their straight-consumer (not prosumer) line. But it surely is not without its minuses! The most insulting is that a $900 device carries a labor+parts warranty which is only 90-days long. So you're best off buying from the cheapest, unauthorized dealer since even these will exchange the unit if its dead-on-arrival. If it's...
Strengths: 3.5in lcd
Weakness: 1 meg pix, there's no reason to purchase this cam simply for the still pic capability which is not that great. What makes it really nice is the lcd size.
I have not purchased the cam just yet, i'm still researching. I'm looking at the trv19 & 22, there's really no reason to go w/the 22 or 38 unless you want to take corny pics that you can't develop w/good quality, so why not stay w/the trv19 and buy a sweet 4 meg pixel digital camera for $200 from p'grabber. I saved the best for last. All of you that are mentioning how great of a deal that you got...
Strengths: 3.5" LCD is A++, also very good in low light condition, also very good video quality over all.
Weakness: The capacity of battery that came w/the CAM is too low (only 1hr), need at least 3 hrs battery. Tape is not easy access while using the tripod.
For those of you whose are new with this video camcorder like me, I recommended the following: 1. buy an IEEE fire wire pci card (came with 4pins DV to Standard IEEE Port) cable from Pinacle Studio for $70.00, only need to put the pci card in the PC and you are now ready to capture your movie. 2. To capture video just connect from DV Port of the CAM to the IEEE firewire card port; now you are...
Strengths: Nightshot! Infrared makes all the difference, no lowering shutter speed like the other camcorders which=awful video, 3.5in. LCD, touchscreen is convenient(spot focus), speedy zoom is awesome.
Weakness: 1.0MegaPixel stills are mediocre, but just get a 3MP digital camera (I have Canon A70, its great) for ~$300
I believe sony has acheived supreme excellence with this medium level camcorder. Friends usually see the video right after i film it, so the 3.5in screen is very nice for that. The nightshot is ultimately why sony rules over the rest. All manufacturers except Sony will tell you they have super nightshot or whatever, but the shutter speed is actually lowered which, trust me, makes some terrible...
Strengths: There's no reason to purchase this cam simply for the still pic capability which is not that great & It's light weight.
Weakness: The capacity of battery w/the CAM is very low,Tape does not have easy access,Small Memory Card
To capture video just connect from DV Port of the CAM to the IEEE firewire card port; now you are good to go (no need to read and follow sonny bad manual and soft ware) the card automatically recognize the CAM Other drawbacks: Lithium-ion batteries are not supplied by any 3rd-party vendors and Sony, as is their custom, charge a king's ransom for them. The owner's manual is miserable and many...
Strengths: Compact size, manual exposure and focus, descent still picture quality, remote , best value - paid $718.00 on the internet compare to $899 at the Best Buy.
Weakness: None so far. Sony can make a better package by incluing a tape, hotwire and a slightly longlife battery.
After spending a lot of time researching and trying SONY TRV33, CANNON MC-Z70, I decided to buy TRV-38. Best value for the buck. A nice way to start amature digital photography. I am very pleased with my purchase.
Strengths: nice quality during the day.
Weakness: heavy; TERRIBLE low light quality; motor noise is somewhat disturbing; tape compartment doesn't function stablily
I'm pleased with the daylight quality of the videos. However, the terrible low light recording has made me regret for getting this camcorder even I've read a lot of good reviews before purchase. It's too late to return it, otherwise, I would. don't get this one!! spend the money on something else!
Strengths: Low noise amplification in dark. Battey FM-30 and memory stick 8MB is not sufficient. Atleast FM-50 is reqd and 64MB memory stick also.
Weakness: Blurrs on sudden focus to an nearest object with digital zoom. (Harware is not fast to respond to digital image processing). It will be excellent if this product had a good optical zoom than a digital
I bought it for $683 its not a value for the money. Product is good in terms of electronics, weak in optics. Can be recomended for an ameture.
Sony Handycam Digital Camcorder - 3.5" LCD - CCD
Strengths: Easy to learn & use. 3.5" LCD is great. Auto & manual focus ++. Solid and dependable!
Weakness: Not much to speak of but, the battery and the memory stick that are shipped with the camera need to be upgraded. The bottom load cassette is a minor hassle if you use a tripod.
I am new to camcorders and reviewed a number of models before choosing the Sony DCR-TRV38. It took me about 2 hours of playing around to feel comfortable with the bulk of the features. It's an easy camcorder to use and takes great pictures. I like the fact that you can still shots. Also, during playback of a video recording you can press the photo button and create a still picture. 1 Megapixels...
