Good, Inexpensive Digital Camcorder

Strengths: Small size, lightweight, clear screen, good features

Weakness: 90 minute battery life with default battery, built-in light can be set to auto, on, or off (auto doesn't seem to work very well and on leaves it on all the time, even when not recording), .mod files

I bought this camcorder as we wanted a digital recording device for video of our twin children. Good quality video -- though, we've only used the highest setting. Over 7 hours of recording time at this level with a 90 minute battery. Why not? The 90 minute estimate for the default battery seems about right, given our trials. Much better than I expected

Strengths: -Very small size--this is smaller than my super zoom digital camera! -Easy to use, right out of the box. -Over 7 hours of video on highest setting. -Swivel screen makes taking angle shots easy.

Weakness: -Need a large computer hard drive, a burner, or an external hard drive to keep videos. -Each time you pause recording, it starts a new video file.

This is my first camcorder purchase, and I did a lot of research before buying this camera. My understanding of the camcorder market was: MiniDV camcorders had better video quality, but they are phasing out tapes; high definition camcorders were the highest standard but very expensive (and constant improvements were making them obsolete as soon as you bought them); and hard drive camcorders were...

JVC Everio GZ-MG330 (30GB, blue)

THE GOOD: Attractive price; compact design; holds hours of video. THE BAD: No eye-level viewfinder, mic input, or headphone jack; persistent video compression artifacts. THE BOTTOM LINE: The near-identical models of the JVC Everio GZ-MG300 series--the MG330, MG335, MG360 and MG365--are budget-priced, hard-drive-based camcorders that are nice enough, but produce typical low-budget video.
